A team of 4 cadets from 2499 (Wokingham) Squadron have lifted the prestigious Nowell Cup trophy in a tough, shoulder to shoulder, shoot off with the Army Cadets.
The competition held annually at Reading’s Brock Barracks is a test of marksmanship using small-bore rifles on a 25 metre range. Each firer has to fire two shots against 5 separate bull eye targets – a tough discipline requiring a steady aim and solid skills.
By the end of the competition the ATC team had gained with 743 against the Army Cadets 722 – a resounding win helped by a top score of 96 out of 100 by Cadet David Race.
Cadet Race explained what the win meant to him and his team ” It was a good even contest with both services giving a good account of themselves – but we won the Nowell Cup”. He continued “everyone comes down here in a good spirit and a good mood – you all want each other to do well, which is an important thing. Everyone has a sense of camaraderie which is vital”
Presenting the trophies Colonel Brian Tearle, Chairman of the Berkshire Joint Services Committee, said “You are all supporting good youth organisations and I congratulate all of you for competing with your teams”. He continued “I would also like to thank the team coaches – we all underestimate the work they put in to make you what you are”.
