Flight Sergeant Will Slater of 2402 (Burghfield) Squadron has recently completed a week long cyber course at No.1 Radio School at RAF Cosford. The prestigious course, which qualifies for a Gold PTS badge, is delivered by regular RAF Instructors over three weeks each summer. The course is the top level Cyber qualification in the RAFAC and has been running for only a couple years, meaning that FS Slater is one of less than 100 in the whole Corps to have this award.
The SW Region Radio Officer, Flt Lt Sarah Sturgeon, takes up the story
“During the week at RAF Cosford we also covered a Bronze Cyber TTT (Train the Trainer) which means the cadets who attended can deliver Bronze Cyber to cadets and in addition, working with other cadets and staff, FS Slater also completed a TTT for Bronze Communications; so he can now also he can now also deliver and assess Bronze Comms! As such FS Slater is set to become not only a valuable trainer for his Squadron- but also for his Wing”.
The Cadets & Staff spend the week learning about networking, the cyber environment and the legislation. The cadets also learn about hackers, hacking and hackivisim and cyber security, before actually learning to hack systems and then being challenged to hack a test system. They end the week with an assessment.
