On Sunday, 19th May a coach full of excited cadets and staff headed from RAF Brize Norton across to Tisley Park, Abingdon to take part in the annual Thames Valley Wing athletics competition. With 27 cadets and 4 staff accompanying them Brize Norton squadron was aiming for a successful day in this popular event attended by all squadrons within the Wing.
With a long day ahead covering both field and track events the cadets maintained high spirits as they supported each other throughout the day. For many of the cadets this was their first time at the Athletics competition and they soon got into the spirits of the day cheering each other on. As the day progressed the cadets pulled together as a team to ensure they maintained 100% commitment to complete all the events possible and aim for the top of the winners.
The enthusiasm and determination of all individuals paid off as the squadron was successful in not only returning with 20 medals but also the following trophies:
- Overall Athletics Champions
- Overall Boys Winners
- Overall Girls Winners
- Senior Girls Winners
This this a great testament to the hard work all the cadets put into the events they took part in and the competition was very high against the other squadrons whose cadets also showed the same high levels of determination and sportsmanship.
It was also announced at the event that 2267 (Brize Norton) Squadron had won the 2012-2013 ‘Sports Squadron of the Year’ trophy which is based upon the results of all the sporting events within the wing. Further testament to the squadrons sporting enthusiasm was the announcement that Cdt Lucy Mcdonough had won the ‘Sports Women of the Year’ trophy within Thames Valley.
Overall the event marked a great sporting year for the squadron and further sports the Air Cadet experience and look to see if they ‘Are On Target’ to experience everything that is available to take part in and check to see if ‘Are You On Target’ to experience what the cadets has to offer.
