Banbury Air Cadets were joined other cadets from Kidlington and Chipping Norton to celebrate Battle of Britain Sunday by parading through Banbury Town Centre.
Lead by the Squadron band the cadets, joined by contingents from the Sea Cadets, Army Cadets, Royal British Legion and Royal Air Force Association, marched through the town and past the world famous Banbury cross for a service and act of remembrance at St Mary’s Church. Continue reading →
The teams from 2267 (Brize Norton) Squadron dominated the Thames Valley Wing 5-a-Side Competition held at RAF Benson. Both the male and female teams edged there way confidently through the early rounds before being place against formidable opposition in the finals.
In the key games of the day the Brize Girls team faced against a confident team from 2507 (Bicester) Squadron only for the game to end in a penalty shoot out. The boys faced a similar final against 1116 (Woodley) Squadron with the deciding goal being awarded being a highly contensious shot from the penalty spot. Continue reading →
With the sun out and temperatures in the 20’s, over 100 cadets and staff from across the Thames Valley enjoyed and uncharacteristically warm weekend at Bramley Training Area during the first Wing Tactical Leadership Camp of the year.
Splitting into three groups, first time cadets learnt the basic principles of fieldcraft and living in the field, an Intermediate group brushed up on existing skills whilst learning how to lead and the most advanced cadets were given an intensive weekend where they were tested to the maximum including a demanding stretcher carry. The Thames Valley Wing Media Team has been recognised for their hard work throughout 2010 with the presentation of the Media and Communications Award (MACA) for “Best Wing Media Team” which was presented by Commandant Air Cadets at a glittering ceremony held at RAF Cranwell this weekend. Their citation read:-
“Lead by Sqn Ldr Mark Trevena (MCO) and Flt Lt Rob Westerberg (DMCO) the team consists of photographers (Flt Lt Grant Rogers, Flt Lt Julian Rose and CI Neil Parramore), media specialists (Flt Lt Julie Alexander) and an active web team (Sqn Ldr Nick Foy and CI Mark Gray). Continue reading →
New Prime Minister, David Cameron MP, has made an informal visit to 136 (Chipping Norton) Squadron – his first visit to an Air Cadet unit as PM – to meet cadets and staff. Mr Cameron lives close to the Squadron, as the MP for Witney, and was invited to the unit by a parent of a cadet.
After inspecting the cadets, he spoke informally about the importance of the armed forces adding “the cadets are the future of the armed forces” and how, as an ex-cadet himself with Eton CCF, he understands the importance of the Cadets Forces. Continue reading →
In temperatures of up 28oC Oxfordshire Air Cadets have marched through the streets of Oxfordshire with Sea Cadets and Army Cadets to celebrate Cadet 150.
The cadets started the celebrations with a service at Christ Church Cathedral where following a welcome by the Bishop of Oxford, Right Reverend John Pritchard, the Lord Lieutenants Cadets read the lessons. The Lord Lieutenant, Nr Tim Stevenson OBE, also gave an address where he praised the work of all of the Cadet forces and thanked them for their valuable work they perform in their local communities throughout Oxfordshire. Over 400 Cadets and staff from Thames Valley Wing helped the RAF celebrate its 90th anniversary in style, with a parade at RAF Halton.
The Reviewing Officer, who inspected all 400 cadets and 30 staff on parade, was Group Captain Richard Gammage, Station Commander RAF Halton. Other VIPs included Air Commodore John Lamont from MoD Abbey Wood and the Mayors of Witney and Abingdon. Continue reading →
