Air Cadet Diamond Jubilee Awards

76 uniformed members of staff from Thames Valley Wing have been awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal.

The members of staff were presented with the medal by Air Commodore Paul Lyall OBE of the Joint Services Defence College during a high profile parade at Dalton Barracks; in front of family, friends and guests. Continue reading

Next Stop The Olympics For Thames Valley Cadets?

The success of the Thames Valley Wing sports teams continued recently with a fantastic haul of trophies at the recent inter-Wing athletics competition.

Held against the backdrop of the forthcoming Olympics, and with an Olympic torch in attendance, carried by the Regional Sports Officer, Squadron Leader Costin, the competition saw cadets from across the South West Region pitted against one another to win the various pieces of silverware on offer and also to gain a place on the team to compete against the other Regions in the Corps later this year at RAF Cosford. Britwell Shine in the Sun

Britwell Air Cadets were in the silverware after winning the lions share of the medals and trophies at the Thames Valley Wing Athletics Championships held at Abingdon’s Tilsey Park.

Over 200 cadets and 50 staff took part in glorious sunshine; battling it out to be crowned champions. 11 events were on offer across 5 age categories headed up by Flight Sergeant Barry Tweddle, the Wing Sports Officer. Continue reading

Opposites Attract in a Classic 5-a-Side Battle

Cadets from Chipping Norton, based in North Oxfordshire, and cadets from Earley in Berkshire have proved themselves best of the bunch in a thrilling 5-a-side tournament held at RAF Benson.

28 teams from across the Thames Valley started the day with a series of league competitions for the male and female trophies before being narrowed down to the top 12 teams for the nail biting play off stage. Continue reading

Sunny Side Up for Team Thames Valley

A team of cadets from Thames Valley Wing have come away from the South West Regional Activity Day with a haul of silverware and a respectable 3rd place overall.

Despite the unseasonable temperatures a team of cadets including those from Woodley, Windsor, Wantage, Wokingham, Reading and Earley took up the challenge in Squad Drill, Banner Drill, Websites, Media Skills, Aircraft Recognition, Aviation Art, Aero modelling and Photography. Continue reading

Wing Competition Heats Up!

In a nail biting finish the cadets of 381 (Reading) Squadron proved they were the best by winning the recent Wing Activities Day held at Edward Brooks Barracks near Abingdon.

Against the back drop of a deep blue sky and bright sunshine, 21 teams from across the Wing started the day in contention with a testing set of competitions ahead of them. This included Field Craft, Public Speaking, Adventure Training, First Aid, Aircraft Recognition, Foot Drill, Media Skills, Aviation Art, Photography, Website construction and Aero modelling. 594 to the Fore!

A team of select cadets from 594 (Thame) Squadron proved they were the best in a test of field craft skills held recently at Bramley Training Area.

The weekend had originally been scheduled for a Inter-Service Competition with the Sea Cadet Corps and Army Cadet Force – but when the other cadet services pulled out the weekend was quickly offered to all of Thames Valley Wing’s Squadrons, 7 of which took up this short notice challenge. Brize Own 5 A Side!

The teams from 2267 (Brize Norton) Squadron dominated the Thames Valley Wing 5-a-Side Competition held at RAF Benson. Both the male and female teams edged there way confidently through the early rounds before being place against formidable opposition in the finals.

In the key games of the day the Brize Girls team faced against a confident team from 2507 (Bicester) Squadron only for the game to end in a penalty shoot out. The boys faced a similar final against 1116 (Woodley) Squadron with the deciding goal being awarded being a highly contensious shot from the penalty spot. Continue reading
