2402 (Burghfield) Squadron

2402 Squadron is part of Thames Valley Wing, in the South-West Region. We parade on Monday and Wednesday evenings and take cadets aged 12+ who are in Year 8 or above.

Air Cadet Diamond Jubilee Awards

76 uniformed members of staff from Thames Valley Wing have been awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal.

The members of staff were presented with the medal by Air Commodore Paul Lyall OBE of the Joint Services Defence College during a high profile parade at Dalton Barracks; in front of family, friends and guests. Continue reading

Britwell Shine in the Sun

Britwell Air Cadets were in the silverware after winning the lions share of the medals and trophies at the Thames Valley Wing Athletics Championships held at Abingdon’s Tilsey Park.

Over 200 cadets and 50 staff took part in glorious sunshine; battling it out to be crowned champions. 11 events were on offer across 5 age categories headed up by Flight Sergeant Barry Tweddle, the Wing Sports Officer. Continue reading

Canoeing and Climbing Taster for Thames Valley Wing

On a very soggy Sunday in April, cadets and staff from across Thames Valley Wing took to the water and the wall at Adventure Dolphin in Pangbourne.

Despite the torrential rain, several cadets and staff made the trip to Adventure Dolphin in Pangbourne for a day of taster sessions in canoeing and climbing. Organised by FS Chris Harding (ATC), the cadets spent half the day learning some basic skills in a canoe on the river Thames, and the other half on the indoor climbing wall at the centre testing their climbing skills. Wing Competition Heats Up!

In a nail biting finish the cadets of 381 (Reading) Squadron proved they were the best by winning the recent Wing Activities Day held at Edward Brooks Barracks near Abingdon.

Against the back drop of a deep blue sky and bright sunshine, 21 teams from across the Wing started the day in contention with a testing set of competitions ahead of them. This included Field Craft, Public Speaking, Adventure Training, First Aid, Aircraft Recognition, Foot Drill, Media Skills, Aviation Art, Photography, Website construction and Aero modelling. 594 to the Fore!

A team of select cadets from 594 (Thame) Squadron proved they were the best in a test of field craft skills held recently at Bramley Training Area.

The weekend had originally been scheduled for a Inter-Service Competition with the Sea Cadet Corps and Army Cadet Force – but when the other cadet services pulled out the weekend was quickly offered to all of Thames Valley Wing’s Squadrons, 7 of which took up this short notice challenge. Burghfield Royal Flypast

A trio of Air Cadets from 2402 (Burghfield) Squadron were granted the rare privilege of leading the Queens Birthday Flypast onboard a Chinook helicopter from RAF Odiham.

The cadets, who flew alongside colleagues from Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire were greeted by members of number 27 Squadron and given a safety brief regarding the helicopter itself before it was time to get issued with their flying helmets. Next stop was the briefing room where the pilot, Squadron Leader Stu Hague and his co-pilot, Flight Lieutenant Tim Andrews gave them an overview of the planned route of the flight and provided them with some last minute safety instructions. Field craft Fun in the Sun

With the sun out and temperatures in the 20’s, over 100 cadets and staff from across the Thames Valley enjoyed and uncharacteristically warm weekend at Bramley Training Area during the first Wing Tactical Leadership Camp of the year.

Splitting into three groups, first time cadets learnt the basic principles of fieldcraft and living in the field, an Intermediate group brushed up on existing skills whilst learning how to lead and the most advanced cadets were given an intensive weekend where they were tested to the maximum including a demanding stretcher carry. Multiactivity adventure training in Pangbourne

Cadets from across Thames Valley Wing assembled at Adventure Dolphin Pangbourne on Saturday 2nd April 2011 to take part in a multi activity training day; the first in the Wing to incorporate both climbing and canoeing.

Following an initial briefing, the cadets were split into two groups to tackle their activities – the first group tackling Adventure Dolphin’s indoor climbing wall – taking on 9 climbing challenging routes over the course of the morning. Continue reading
